Sometimes it’s tough to look back on the year as we come to its end, especially when we’ve faced so much loss. And sometimes, it seems like the losses wait until just before the year ends to hit us. When Andre Braugher, who tackled everything from comedy on Brooklyn Nine-Nine to drama on Homicide: Life on the Street, passed away, General Hospital‘s Finola Hughes (Anna) took a moment to say farewell and share how much he meant.

For Hughes, her incredible respect began back on his first starring television role on Homicide. “Every single episode,” she wrote on Instagram, “I was glued to the screen, but only wanted to watch his character Frank Pembleton. Such a mad crush, his presence, his work, everything.”

For her children, though, they “adore him in Brooklyn,” where for eight unforgettable seasons he played strict commanding officer Raymond Holt — a sane man in the midst of the 99th precinct’s madness.

Braugher was just 61 when he passed, shocking much of the entertainment world. He’d been amusing us and driving us to tears ever since his incredibly powerful debut back in 1989’s Glory.

2023 has been filled with far too many unexpected deaths and too many lives cut short before their time. From Matthew Perry to Billy Miller, this has been a difficult, heartbreaking year. But all those of us left can do is honor their passing and celebrate their lives, just as Hughes has done.

The actress wrapped up her touching tribute by “sending love & thoughts to his family,” and thanking the incredible actor for his “exceptional talent and sharing it with us all.”
