EJ Vows to Avenge His Mother’s Death as ‘Susan’ Taunts Ava — Who May Be Keeping a Few Secrets

Sloan wakes up to Eric in the hospital. She says she had a bad dream that she lost the baby. His voice breaks as he tells her it wasn’t a dream. Kayla joins them as Sloan breaks down. Kayla explains that Sloan has an autoimmune disorder that is likely what caused the miscarriage.

When Kayla leaves them alone, Sloan cries that she’s being punished. When he says God doesn’t work that way, she exclaims, “Your precious God took our baby for the decisions that I’ve made!” Eric doesn’t understand why she would deserve punishment. “What did you do?” Sloan flashes back to ensuring Eric doesn’t find out EJ’s not the father of Nicole’s baby.

In bed, EJ startles awake from a dream about Ava and Susan’s car going off the cliff. After he dresses, EJ deduces to Nicole that his nightmares are due to his inability to avenge his mother’s death. There’s no justice in Ava holing up in a cushy mental hospital. Nicole doesn’t think Ava’s faking it. Regardless, Ava and Xander are alive and well while his mother was sent to an early grave. The nightmares will continue to plague him until they get what they deserve.

Wearing a drab grey robe, Susan glares at Ava through her cateye tortoise shell glasses.

In Bayview, a terrified Ava tells Harris that Susan has come back from the dead. She sees a frowning Susan shaking her head at her. Harris tells her that’s not Susan. Ava runs up to a woman, Midge, with dark hair and glasses similar to Susan’s. Ava begs “Susan” to leave her alone. She lunges for Midge, but Harris pulls her away. Ava cries that she deserves “Susan’s” punishment. Harris encourages Ava to look again. Ava sees Midge cowering against the wall. Ava sobs, fearing she’ll never be well again.

After Ava’s calmed down, Harris muses that reclaiming mental health is not a straight line. Maybe she just needs her meds adjusted. Ava isn’t sure anything will help her. She fears she’s incurable. Harris knows of a psychiatrist who can help her free of judgment — Dr. Marlena Evans.

Harris grabs Ava's wrists as she cowers.

Roman pours coffee for Marlena at the Pub as they discuss Victor. Marlena knows he caused a lot of chaos and difficulty, but he did make the place more interesting. They toast to Victor and those who loved him. Marlena brings up Eric’s engagement. Roman expresses disdain, leading her to point out that Sloan is having their grandchild. Roman does miss using his grandfatherly skills. Marlena suggests they throw a baby shower for them. Roman passes, recalling how Sloan insulted his clam chowder. She might be having his grandbaby, and she might even marry Eric, but that doesn’t mean he has to feed or like her.

Melinda slinks out of a sleeping Li’s bed to search for proof connecting him to Stefan’s attempted murder. She scrolls through his phone as he wakes up. Oops, she says. She thought it was her phone. They discuss their night, and morning, together and kiss again. He starts to disrobe her, but she has to get to the courthouse. While Melinda takes a shower, he looks at his phone, wondering what she’s up to.

In the living room, Tripp talks to Kayla on the phone. When she gives him the day off, he asks after Sloan and why she lost the baby. Melinda comes out. “Sloan lost the baby?!” After he hangs up, Tripp tells the D.A. he can’t discuss Sloan’s condition. “Oh please,” she says. “You Salem U doctors violate HIPAA more than you change your scrubs.” She runs out to talk to Sloan herself. “Wait,” he yells after her. “You’re not supposed to know!”

In their bedroom, Nicole urges EJ to let his vengeance go. Susan would want him to turn the other cheek. When he refuses her, Nicole reminds him they are planning a wedding and should be in their honeymoon phase. EJ quips he can focus on his bride while eliminating dangerous psychopaths at the same time. When Nicole objects, he sighs, agreeing the timing isn’t ideal. She tells him to go to the courthouse for their marriage license while she goes to the hospital for her prescription.

Ava gapes at a robe-clad woman with dark hair and glasses. Harris holds out his hands to Ava as if to calm her down.

At Bayview, Ava tells Harris she did some really dirty things to the people Marlena cares about, including sleeping with her husband. Harris practically chokes on his water. Plus, she made their best friends, Steve and Kayla’s lives hell. She was also responsible for the plane crash that killed Marlena’s former father-in-law, and then she blew up a church with Marlena in it. Harris agrees that’s a lot, but he has also done terrible things to her loved ones, and Dr. Evans has been helping him anyway. Since Marlena treated The Necktie Killer, Ava tells Harris to knock himself out and call her.

Over the phone at the Pub, Marlena agrees to meet with Harris. She asks Roman to tell Eric they’ve decided to give them a baby shower. “We have?” Roman asks. “We have,” Marlena declares, grinning. Roman chuckles and takes out his phone.

Sloan starts to tell Eric something at the hospital, but Kayla’s return interrupts them. Kayla tells Sloan that her condition is treatable, but not curable. Sloan worries about future pregnancies. Eric urges her to focus on her recovery and leaves to call Roman back.

Melinda visits Sloan, who is appalled she overheard Tripp talking about her miscarriage. When Melinda says how sorry she is, Sloan scowls. “Are you, Melinda? Are you so sorry?” Of course she is, Melinda says sincerely. Reiterating that she’s being punished, Sloan declares she’s going to tell Eric the truth about Nicole’s baby. Melinda doesn’t think she should do that.

With folded arms, Melinda looks down at Sloan with concern.

In the hospital lobby, Eric calls Roman. He tries to tell his dad about the baby, but Roman goes on and on about the shower. Nicole steps off the elevator as a teary-eyed Eric shouts, “Dad, you don’t understand! There can’t be a shower.” His voice lowers as he says Sloan lost the baby.

Li finds Tripp preparing for a run at the apartment. He smugly apologizes for how loud he and Melinda were. Tripp asks if he’s giving her a second chance. Li says they’ll see. After Tripp leaves, Li’s smile drops as he pulls out his phone.

While running, Tripp bumps into EJ in the Square. They promptly argue about Ava. Tripp sternly declares that EJ will just have to deal with it when his mother is finally released from Bayview. He runs off. EJ glowers. “We’ll see about that.”

At Bayview, Harris leaves the community room to talk with Marlena. Susan slinks up to Ava’s ear. She taunts that no one can help her until she starts telling the truth.
