It’s safe to say that Adam Newman is one of the most complicated characters on not only Young & Restless, but daytime as a whole. Time and again, Adam has sworn that he’s going to change his wicked, manipulative ways… only to fall right back into them, usually sooner rather than later.

But lately… darned if he doesn’t sound incredibly sincere. “I know that my life probably needs a complete reset before I self-destruct,” he recently admitted to his dad, the equally-complex Victor.

Nor surprisingly, Victor said exactly what the audience was thinking. “I know you,” he replied. “You try and for a while, it works, and then your darker side emrges and whatever you’ve accomplished, you undo it!”

Take, for example, the whole Adustus/SNA fiasco. For a brief, shining moment, it looked as if Adam was going to work side-by-side with ex-wife Sharon and her ex-husband Nick for the greater good of their new business venture.

Ok, maybe we shouldn’t use that as an example, because frankly, it seemed like the worst idea ever right from the start. Even if you forget — which both the show and many fans would like you to — that Adam once stole Sharon and Nick’s baby (and let them believer her dead for months), there’s still way too much history between the three of them for such a work environment to be anything but toxic.

Certainly Adam has been talking the talk… mostly. “Maybe somewhere along the line, I’ll turn into an actual human being,” he told Victor. “And hopefully, I can start erasing some of the damage that I’ve caused.”

Nick, not surprisingly, has largely been skeptical of his brother’s latest attempt to become a new man (pun intended). “I never know what I’m going to get with you or what I can believe,” Nick told his sibling. “There have been times where we seem to build a pretty good relationship. And then, like clockwork, you do something to blow it all up.”

Nick later admitted, “I actually think it would be pretty cool to have a brother… someone who I could count on, someone who I could trust.” But the odds of Adam ever being able to step into that position seem slim to none.

We want to believe Adam could change… aren’t some of daytime’s best stories those which show us the power of redemption? But of late, Adam’s shared a few too many smirks with his own reflection. And Sally, who herself is a big believer in second (and third and fourth) chances, was a bit unnerved when Adam said he “had everything plotted out.”

Taken aback, she admitted he’d put it differently. “You and the word ‘plotted’ makes me [worry],” she told her ex. Why did it cause her to have doubts? “Maybe it’s because you keep making these little slip-ups, like a little bit of cynacism here, or [an] old Adam word there.”

He swore she had nothing to worry about… and yet, by that evening’s end, he’d share a kiss with his brother’s girlfriend.

Should Adam really be reverting to style, it will prove a monumental disaster. Not because of the fallout from whatever plot he might hatch — hey, his word, not ours. But rather because he’ll have no bridges left to burn. Already, nearly everyone in Genoa City looks at Adam as if waiting for him to show his true colors. Nikki has issued him a warning, Nick has put him on notice. Only Sharon and Sally seem willing to accept the possibility that he’s trying to change.

But what of the audience? What about you? Do you believe that Adam has changed? Do you believe he even can? Hit the comments with your thoughts.
