At Last! General Hospital Gives ‘Sprina’ Fans What They’ve Been Dying For — Even If It’s At the Worst Possible Time

It’s no secret that General Hospital fans have been annoyed with the way Spencer and Trina’s romance has played out in recent months. The decision to have him live with Esme in order to help raise Ace was definitely not a popular one… especially as it meant him spending even less time with true love Trina.

As a result, Sprina Nation has complained that while Joss and Dex have near daily snugglefests, Trina spends more time talking about Spencer than being with him. Now, whether because it’s the next natural step or perhaps the temporary writers currently in charge of things are responding to the social media outcry, it looks as if things are finally about to change.

According to the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest, “Spencer and Trina will finally take their relationship to the next level.” Now, you don’t have to be fluent in soap speak to know exactly what that particular phrase means! No, they won’t be heading up to the roof of General Hospital, but rather upping their intimacy game.

If there’s a potential downside to this, it’s that the timing couldn’t be worse. For one thing, the very next sentence in Digest‘s tease indicates that this will happen even “as Spencer continues to bond more with Ace.” Which no doubt means spending more time with Esme…

Then there’s the fact that Spencer and Trina are, in a sense, living on borrowed time. Let’s not forget that earlier this summer, Nicholas Alexander Chavez landed a starring role in the highly-anticipated Netflix production Monster: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

How big a deal is this? Well, he’ll be playing Lyle Menendez, one of the brothers at the center of the infamous murder. And that means that at some point — likely once the currently-unfolding actor and writer strikes are resolved — Chavez will need to take some time away from the show to film. How long? Well, that has yet to be determined. But it’s certainly not surprising that when the rising star shared on Instagram that he’d spent his 24th birthday climbing Mt. Fuji, the caption — which you can read in its entirety below — indicated he was “excited for the year ahead.”

Finally, there’s the dark cloud on the horizon that has taken the form of Spencer’s supposedly-dead dad. Given how protective Spencer has become of his young half-brother, might he wind up spending even more time with the tot (and, by extension, Esme) once Nikolas makes his resurrection official?

With so much going on just beneath the surface — both on and off screen — it’s not surprising that we’re excited about what’s next for Spencer and Trina… even as we dread what might soon follow!
